Soils
The soil is marked throughout the region by a predominantly calcareous composition, but with an extreme diversity of textures. This forces viticulture to understand historically and scientifically the terroir of each plot. Fontanafredda has vines planted from 1940 to 1999. In such diverse soil textures, the importance of the root of the vine is essential. This has meant for years the delimitation of the elabo-rations by their origin.
1858
Fontanafredda is heir to Italian romanticism. In the second third of the 19th century, with the unification of the Italian states into a nation, the first king of Italy, Vittorio Emmanuele II bought the Fontanafredda estate for the woman he loved: Rosa Vercellana. Founded in 1858, Fontanafredda is one of the most important projects in today’s DOCG Barolo.
